What's Driving Mosquito Control Demand in Georgia

Georgia's mosquito pressure comes from two fairly different directions depending on where a property sits. Inland and across the Atlanta metro, the standard culprits are container breeding species that need only a small amount of standing water, a clogged gutter or forgotten planter saucer, to complete their life cycle in the state's warm, humid climate. Along the coast, saltmarsh mosquitoes breed in the tidal marshes that line much of Georgia's shoreline and are known for aggressive daytime biting and the ability to travel miles from where they hatched, meaning a coastal property's mosquito problem isn't always traceable to standing water on site at all. Georgia has also had the Asian tiger mosquito established statewide since it arrived in the southeastern US decades ago, an aggressive daytime biter that breeds in even smaller amounts of water than most native species need. That combination, coastal marsh mosquitoes, statewide container breeders, and the established Asian tiger mosquito, is why yard treatment approaches vary a fair amount across the state.

Licensing in Georgia: Georgia regulates structural pest control through the Georgia Department of Agriculture under the Georgia Structural Pest Control Act, which sets up three separate credential types. Any business performing pest control for hire must hold a Company License, and that company must have a Designated Certified Operator for each service category it offers, such as general pest control, termite work, fumigation, or wood destroying organism inspections, since these categories are licensed individually rather than under one blanket credential. Certified Operators qualify through a combination of verified field experience, or a relevant degree plus one year of experience, followed by a state exam. Every technician who performs or sells pest control work at a licensed company must also hold a Registered Employee card. Credentials are not prorated and all expire on June 30 of odd numbered years. Nuisance wildlife removal, such as raccoons, squirrels, or bats, falls under a separate permit issued by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources rather than the Department of Agriculture's pest control licensing structure.
