Florida's screened lanais and pool enclosures are a defining feature of residential construction across the state, giving homeowners a semi outdoor living space that sits behind mesh screening rather than solid walls or glass. That screening keeps larger pests out reasonably well, but it does little to stop ants, palmetto bugs, and small lizards like anoles and geckos from finding their way through even a small tear or gap, and a lanai's warm, often humid microclimate between the screen and the house tends to draw exactly these pests toward the structure itself. General residential pest control in Florida often has to account for this in between space as its own zone, distinct from both the fully enclosed interior and the open yard, since a compromised screen effectively removes the barrier a homeowner is counting on. That lanai specific pressure point is a genuinely Florida construction feature that most other states simply do not build around.

Licensing in Florida: Florida regulates structural pest control through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under the Structural Pest Control Act, and licensing here is more finely divided than in most states. Certified operators are licensed in one or more of four categories: General Household Pest and Rodent Control, Lawn and Ornamental Pest Control, Termite and Other Wood Destroying Organisms Control, and Fumigation, and a general household license alone does not authorize termite work, which requires its own certification and exam. Businesses pay a $300 license fee, each certification exam costs $300 per category, and every location must have a certified operator in charge along with minimum liability insurance. FDACS also issues a separate Limited Commercial Wildlife Management certification specifically for trapping rats and mice in, on, or under structures, while broader nuisance wildlife work such as squirrel, raccoon, or bat removal falls outside FDACS entirely and is instead addressed through Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules, including permit requirements for excluding bats during the state's spring and summer maternity season.
