Florida's high water table rules out basements for nearly all residential construction, and without a basement to use for long term storage, Florida homeowners rely heavily on garages for storing boxed belongings, documents, and books, spaces that run considerably more humid in Florida's climate than an equivalent storage area in a state with lower ambient humidity and a genuine winter dry season. That garage based storage habit, combined with Florida's consistently high humidity across nearly the entire year rather than just a wet season, gives silverfish, which feed on paper, cardboard, and starches, sustained access to both food and moisture without the seasonal dry spell that would slow their activity in a less humid climate. Silverfish problems in Florida homes often trace directly back to garage storage rather than the basement clutter that tends to be the source further north, a difference tied entirely to the state's construction style and year round humidity.

Licensing in Florida: Florida regulates structural pest control through the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services under the Structural Pest Control Act, and licensing here is more finely divided than in most states. Certified operators are licensed in one or more of four categories: General Household Pest and Rodent Control, Lawn and Ornamental Pest Control, Termite and Other Wood Destroying Organisms Control, and Fumigation, and a general household license alone does not authorize termite work, which requires its own certification and exam. Businesses pay a $300 license fee, each certification exam costs $300 per category, and every location must have a certified operator in charge along with minimum liability insurance. FDACS also issues a separate Limited Commercial Wildlife Management certification specifically for trapping rats and mice in, on, or under structures, while broader nuisance wildlife work such as squirrel, raccoon, or bat removal falls outside FDACS entirely and is instead addressed through Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules, including permit requirements for excluding bats during the state's spring and summer maternity season.
