The brown marmorated stink bug reached Connecticut by working its way north and east from its original mid Atlantic foothold, and the state's older homes, many built with the kind of clapboard siding, exposed sills, and gaps around window and door trim common in pre war New England construction, give the insect plenty of entry points as it searches for a place to overwinter each fall. Stink bugs gather on sun warmed, south and west facing exterior walls in large numbers before working their way through small gaps, then spend the winter tucked into wall voids and attics, occasionally reappearing on unseasonably warm days before disappearing again as temperatures drop. Connecticut's older, less air sealed housing stock tends to see heavier fall stink bug pressure than newer, tightly built homes, since the same construction age that makes carpenter ants and mice more of a concern also gives stink bugs an easier path indoors.

Licensing in Connecticut: Connecticut regulates pest control through the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection's Pesticide Management Program, which certifies commercial applicators by category rather than issuing one general license. Separately, anyone in the business of trapping and removing nuisance wildlife, including squirrels, raccoons, bats, and birds, must hold a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator license issued by DEEP's Wildlife Division under state law, a two year license that requires completing an approved training course and passing an exam.
